I have been watching a lot of video's about people making armor sets with EVA-Foam. This was super inspiring and i had to try this myself. I did think that making an armorset was a little out of my league, so i wanted to make something simple. A kid from my work is super into minecraft, we always talk about it and when i was talking about my idea's he suggested a pickaxe.
The process
the most difficult thing about this project was finding the right materials. A lot of these projects that i like to do are inspired from american youtubers, so it is always hard to find these materials in the EU. Little did i know that this youtuber that i watched is from germany! and she linked all these websites that i could check out
I started with making a mockup on paper, each square is 2x2cm and i liked the look of that size so i instantly went with this. It was also easier for me in the long run to have the colored squares so i lightly colored them.
After i made this mockup i started with cutting out the first shape. I did all this cutting free hand and looking back on it i used a ruler with the next pieces.
the part that took me longest was cutting all the squares for the middle layer. So... Many.. Squares. It was worth it! This made sure i could make it more 3D without wasting materials :D
After all the glue fully cured i started with priming it. This primer makes sure that all the little holes in the foam close so that the paint will actually stick to it :) What i did not know was that i did not have any filler, i thought the primer was the same thing. After this "setback" i continued anyway, this was my first try and it shouldnt really matter how it looks.
When the primer dried i first did a base layer of white paint. Painting the colors was super frustrating, i first did the brown. but after it drying it seemed wrong. I ended up using another brown and this one looked more like the brown from in the game.
The blue was even trickier. I did a first batch of blue but this also didnt seem right. I took it with me to work to get the opinion of my local minecraft expert :P and he agreed with me that it was too blue. I ended up mixing blue with a little green and some silver, because my local minecraft expert said that it should be sparkly
The end result is pretty good, and i decided to also make a sword so i could pair them. I did buy filler this time and some foam clay incase i need that for the sword :P
